Thousands of students walked out of school today to rally in front of City Hall Park along with elected officials & transit union members in protest of the MTA’s plan to cut free student Metrocards.  According to the MTA the cuts are necessary to close an $800 million budget gap.  If the proposal goes through this will affect an estimated 500,000 students who receive free or reduced-fare MetroCards in NYC school system—leaving families responsible for paying an upwards of $1000 per child a year for school transportation.

The walkout was organized by the Urban Youth Collaborative.  Following the rally students then walked across the Brooklyn Bridge to the former MTA headquarters in Brooklyn shouting  “The students united will never be defeated!”
